We know you love online shopping, and you know we love sharing our favourite ethical stores with you. This week we’d like to introduce you to ecoture australia, an online beauty and fashion destination created by mother and daughter duo Rebecca Dow and Caitlin Clark. After struggling to find fashion and beauty products that were not only gorgeous but also ethical, sustainable and cruelty-free, the pair took matters into their own hands and launched ecoture australia – a premium online shopping destination for people who want real style – but not at the expense of the planet and its human and animal occupants. Here ecoture australia co-founder and brand manager Caitlin Clark shares the store’s journey with THE ECO EDIT.
THE ECO EDIT: What prompted you and your mum to create an eco-focused shop?
Caitlin: I became vegan in 2015, which led to extensive research into where everything I bought came from – and it was a truly eye-opening experience. Then after I had a leather-free handbag destroyed by an exploding smoothie, it became clear that there simply weren’t enough places to buy a range of products that I was confident were both ethically produced and cruelty-free. So that’s when we decided to create a site that had covetable fashion and beauty products that we were also personally comfortable about stocking.
Why are natural and ethical cosmetics important to you?
For me, it’s driven by the fact I’ve always had troublesome skin and so I’m very careful about the ingredients I use on it. The products are often just nicer, they feel and smell better, and introduce a bit of luxury into every day. When it comes to ethics, I can’t justify needlessly exploiting the Earth or its animal inhabitants for what is essentially my vanity.
I can’t justify needlessly exploiting the Earth or its animal inhabitants for what is essentially my vanity…
What role do you see ethical and sustainable products playing in the future of society and retail?
They’re already rapidly increasing in popularity, which is fantastic. But I’d like to think that ethical and sustainable products are more than just a trend. With so much information at our fingertips, more brands are being transparent in their operations, so I think ethical and sustainable products are the promising future of retail. I look forward to the day that they’re the norm.
Can you please describe who the ecoture australia customer is, and what they’re looking for in their products?
We like to say the ecoture customer can be anyone. Many come to our site specifically looking for ethical or organic products, however we’re increasingly seeing customers that are simply looking for quality – clothes that are made well and beauty products that work. There have also been more men buying from our site lately, which is encouraging too.
What are your fave beauty products you stock?
1) Jasmine Lotion from Earth tu Face – it smells absolutely divine. I always get so many compliments when I’m wearing it and it’s beautifully light on the skin.
2) La Crème Gommante (Natural Organic Gentle Cream Exfoliant) from Absolution – it’s a lovely, fine scrub that removes impurities but is gentle enough for even my sensitive skin. I use it twice a week, it’s an essential for me.
3) Natural Nail Colour Remover Wipes from LVX – these wipes are amazing! They have a natural, plant-based formula that removes nail colour so easily but they actually leave your nails looking healthier after use.
What’s next for ecoture australia?
We have an exciting expansion coming up but can’t give away too many details at this stage.
With temperatures dipping to bone-chilling lows these past few weeks, our skin is suffering some serious side effects. From chapped lips to dry, cracked fingers, scaly legs and a parched flaky face, this season is certainly proving to be no picnic for your epidermis. Here we show you how to solve your dry winter skin woes the natural way.
Switch To A More Nourishing Cleanser
While most natural cleansers are gentle and hydrating, in the winter months your skin may require even more TLC and nourishment. We recommend switching to an oil-based cleansing balm or cream.
One of our current faves is Antipodes Grapeseed Butter Cleanser, which replenishes your skin with oodles of flaxseed oil, jojoba, coconut oil, shea butter and Vinanza Gold grapeseed extract. We truly love how indulgent this cleansing balm feels as your massage it into your skin.
Another of our winter cleansing faves is May Lindstrom’s The Honey Mud Gentle Cleansing Silk, which is a lush, velvety face mask and cream cleanser in one. We recommend popping this on about 20 minutes pre-shower (or bath) and letting it truly soak into your skin before massaging it in deeper and rinsing off.
Fight Dry Winter Skin With An Ultra-Rich Moisturiser
The only way to beat dry winter skin is to combat it with heavy-duty hydration. When shopping for a face or body moisturiser in the colder months, look for products that have a higher natural oil content to help replenish your skin’s barrier layer and protect it from harsh temperatures and moisture-zapping wind gusts.
Here at THE ECO EDIT we can’t get enough of Weleda Skin Food. Chock-a-block full of skin-loving goodies like sweet almond oil, rosemary, wild pansy, chamomile and calendula, this cult favourite is a supremely rich moisturiser that’s perfect for both face and body (multi-tasking for the win!) – and with a small tube only setting you back $14.95, it’s a bargain as well.
We also love The Beauty Chef’s Beauty Fix Balm, which is amazing for super dry hands, chapped lips, scaly legs and irritated or inflamed dry patches anywhere on your winter-ravaged body. Made using fermented young coconut, honey, rosehip and linseed, it’s a great multi-tasker and one of the best natural skin salves on the market. Give it a whirl and you’ll soon discover why this little tub is a staple in our beauty cabinet.

It gently cleanses skin without stripping away its natural oils, and is also infused with Rahua’s signature rainforest-derived Ungurahua oil, along with quinoa and hibiscus.

Turn shower time into a ultra-refreshing experience with Mukti’s zesty Botanique Body Wash. Featuring the invigorating scent of desert lime and lemon verbena this luxe cleansing gel is infused with nourishing certified organic botanical extracts, it truly is a beautiful way to stay fresh and clean.
This fresh, vibrant castile soap works wonderfully as both a body wash and hand wash. The green-tea scent is the perfect way to refresh your senses in the bath or shower. Castile soap is made from plant-based ingredients, making it great for vegans, and Dr. Bronner’s version is concentrated, biodegradable and extremely effective in addition to being made with organic and certified fair trade ingredients.
While we adore healthy, safe and 100% natural skincare products, they do tend to be expensive due to the type of ingredients they’re made of and the associated cost of manufacturing natural products. But green beauty doesn’t always have to equal pricey beauty – here we reveal five of our favourite natural moisturisers that will keep your skin feeling healthy and hydrated without costing you an arm and a leg.
1. Best Moisturiser For Sensitive Skin:
Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Lotion
For those with a delicate and sensitive complexion, Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Lotion is a gentle and restorative option. Designed for skin that’s prone to imbalance and irritation, this extra mild lotion contains almond oil along with plum kernel oil to boost hydration and restore your skin’s natural protective barrier – and with continued use you’ll noticed a marked improvement in your skin’s resilience. This gorgeous facial lotion is one of our favourite natural moisturisers – and with a price tag under $30, we reckon it’s a total bargain too.
2. Best Day Cream:
Vanessa Megan White Tea Anti-Oxidant Day Cream
If you’re after a day cream that can help protect your skin from environmental stressors as well as keep it hydrated and supple, look no further than Vanessa Megan’s beautiful White Tea Anti-Oxidant Day Cream. Formulated with powerful natural ingredients like white tea extract and pomegranate, this lotion is loaded with potent natural antioxidants, which help combat free radicals. This will help keep your skin functioning at an optimal level, which in turn will help it look and feel more youthful for longer.
3. Best Night Cream:
La Mav Omega-3 Advanced Nightly Repair Crème
This award-winning night cream is an absolute steal at $49.95, and one of our top picks for mature and dry skin types. Designed to deeply hydrate, the rich and luscious formula features omega 3 essential fatty acids derived from jojoba, avocado, Marula oil and shea butter, along with hyaluronic acid which gives skin an intense boost of moisture. This decadent night cream also contains clinically proven bio-actives that will help your skin look and feel healthier, firmer and plumper.
4. Best Moisturiser For Oily Skin:
Acure Oil Control Facial Moisturiser
While most of us associate oily and acne-prone skin with our teen years, more and more adult women (and men) struggle with blemishes and excess sebum production. Some organic and natural moisturisers can overload oily skin, resulting in breakouts – which is why those with oily and acne-prone skin should seek out products designed specifically for their needs. Acure Oil Control Facial Moisturiser contains balancing ingredients including lilac stem cells, which have been shown to even out oil levels and help heal blemishes. The lightweight formula is also easily absorbed, so it won’t leave your skin feeling greasy or suffocated.
5. Best Body Moisturiser:
Madara Flower Dust Lotion
Hands up if you moisturise your faces on a daily basis, but are guilty of neglecting the rest of your body? You’re in luck, because Madara’s beautiful shimmering Flower Dust Lotion will inspire you to turn over a new leaf and treat your body with the TLC it so desperately craves. Featuring sparkling minerals and rosehip extract, this soft and beautifully lightweight lotion gives your skin a subtle, luminous shimmer and also keeps it hydrated for hours on end with moisturising ingredients like cocoa butter and sunflower oil. We recommend applying a little extra on your collarbones, shins and shoulders for an extra-glamorous glow.
Here at THE ECO EDIT, we love discovering fresh, thoughtful, and ethical new businesses that are governed not only by a stylish brand vision, but also a strong moral compass and sense of responsibility to consumers and the environment. Fairlings readily meets each and every one of these criteria with its dedication to the best products and sustainable business practices.
Operating as an online essentials store that curates fair trade, vegan, organic and eco-friendly products, Fairlings was created in 2015 by Canberra-based husband and wife team Michael and Masa. Frustrated with a lack of high quality and ethical cosmetics, toiletries and day-to-day essential items in one centralised place, Michael and Masa decided to take matters into their own hands.
Here the minimalism-loving entrepreneurs reveal what prompted them to launch Fairlings, and what guiding principles they follow in their daily business practices.
THE ECO EDIT: What led you to open an online store?
Michael & Masa: As ethical minimalists ourselves, we have very high standards when making purchasing decisions. Inevitably we grew tired of wasting our time and money testing a bunch of natural products from a dozen different shops until we finally found one that worked.
It’s the combination of performance and ethics that is hard to come by. That’s why we created Fairlings – to help eliminate that decision fatigue and enable our customers to shop freely with a clear conscious. We do all the hard work for you through our selection process.
Why are natural and ethical cosmetics important to you both?
Natural products are extremely important to us because the general public aren’t aware of the toxic and unethical nature of mainstream products. The big brands are solely interested in increasing their profit margins and as a result, they do damage to the environment, animals, workers and our health.
We’re living in an exciting time where we have courageous and passionate entrepreneurs who a making amazing products that are as close to nature as possible. We feel like we have an obligation to make people aware of these alternatives and hopefully shift the demand of ethical everyday essentials.
You prefer to stock just one of each type of product – why is this?
Again, as minimalists, we hate clutter – especially mental clutter. What we found when we were trying to buy products at health food stores was the pain of deciding between 11 different natural deodorants. Masa is an obsessive label reader and it was excruciating process to decide which product to buy.
Ultimately, we didn’t want to buy a product that didn’t perform. We all know that feeling right? You’re in two minds of whether to push through and use it anyway (even though you don’t want to), or leave it to collect dust on your shelf, creating more clutter in the house. Other alternatives include throwing it out, or re-gifting the products to friends – none of these options seems like the right thing.
We thought it would be so much easier if the stores put their best foot forward and stocked what they thought was the best brand in a particular product category. We didn’t see that model anywhere, so we decided to start it ourselves.
A lot of retailers claim that they curate the best natural products but they still stock multiple brands per category, which mind you doesn’t always end up the healthier option. We’ve taken a more polarising approach by attempting to stock only the best.
Sure, there’s a risk of perhaps not being suitable for everyone, but it’s a risk we are willing to take in order to create a more pleasurable and simpler shopping experience for our customers.
Who the Fairlings customer is, and what are they looking for?
At the extreme end of the spectrum, our customers are minimalist vegans. We’re talking about the hardcore label readers who don’t want to create any excess waste or clutter in their lives. Our goal is to serve the strictest of customers and this is what we initially set out to do.
What we’re finding however is a large chunk of our customer base are women who are realising the harm that their current products are doing to their bodies and the environment. They’ve recently started their natural product journey and are finding what combinations work best for them.
They look at our products and read about what we do, and feel like they are in safe hands. They don’t have to read every ingredient and double check the products for safety. These customers used to have the perception that natural products are nice in theory, but they wonder, “do they actually perform?” We aim to debunk this myth and shift the paradigm with our handpicked range.
How does minimalism fit into your lives, and why is it important to you?
Minimalism to us means keeping what you deem as essential and eliminating the rest. We were mentally weighed down and overwhelmed with life. Minimalism was an outlet for us to detox our minds.
We started by decluttering our physical environment. We soon realised that minimalism is much more than decluttering your house – it’s a mindset. You start looking at your calendar, your inbox, your friendships, your mode of transport, pretty much everything, differently.
The question of, “is this essential?” aids of all our decisions. And it’s extremely liberating. The combination of minimalism and veganism has heightened our level of consciousness like we could never of imagined. It’s through this lens that we are now able to live a fulfilling, purpose-driven lifestyle each and every day.
What are some of your top Fairlings product picks?
It will be hard to pick only a few, as we love everything! Truly, that’s why we stock them. But if we had to pick our personal favourites as well as the ones that our customers are loving, here they are:
1. Mukti Hydrating Cleansing Lotion, $54.95
The best quality cleanser we’ve come across. It not only keeps your skin feeling clean, soft and nourished, it doesn’t leave your skin feeling dry like many other cleansers.
2. Vanessa Megan Organic Blood Orange Foaming Hand & Body Wash, $54.95
We love the 2-in-1 aspect of this product, both a hand wash and body wash. Smells AMAZING, leaves your skin feeling fresh and soft. This was one of the trickier items to find that was reasonably priced, felt great and contained quality ingredients.
3. The Divine Company Organic Peppermint Tooth Mousse, $19.95
Probably our favourite product. Cleans your teeth without the nasties! Has a wonderful flavour but an interesting texture because there is no plastic particles like most conventional toothpastes have.
4. One Seed Organic Perfume Sample Set, $37
A perfect gift or a great way to try a few different scents before committing to a bigger bottle. Organic perfume is a must if you love perfumes, conventional ones are super toxic!
5. Moonrise Creek Organic Vegan Mascara, $29.95
A beautiful vegan, organic and handmade thick mascara that will last you all day.
What’s next for Fairlings?
Our focus for 2017 is simple. Continue to find and work with amazing brands and build a community around our products and ethos.
More specifically, it’s our goal to bring on at least one new brand a month and to develop our community through our Ambassador Program.
We’re currently testing a brand that makes certified organic house cleaning products. This has been extremely hard to come by, especially in Australia, so we’re excited about that!
Coconut oil is one of the most versatile beauty products on the market, and helps prove that Mother Nature is undoubtedly the best beautician you’ll ever meet. From skincare to nutrition – and even whiter teeth – there’s very little this miracle oil can’t do. Read on to discover five fantastic ways to incorporate this natural wonder into your daily beauty regime.
1. As A Pre-Cleanser
If your regular cleanser isn’t cutting it when it comes to removing stubborn mascara and eye makeup, coconut oil could be your new bestie. Simply warm up a level tablespoon of coconut oil in the palms of your hands and massage it into your face in circular motions like you would with any cleanser.
Do make sure that you keep your eyes shut tight while cleansing with coconut oil, as any type of oil in your eyes is a big no-no as it can be irritating. To remove, use a warm face cloth or muslin cloth and gently wipe over your skin, and then follow up with your favourite cream cleanser.
2. As a Hair Mask
Coconut oil is incredibly nourishing for your hair because it’s loaded with hydrating and frizz-fighting vitamin E. It’s also great for soothing an irritated or itchy scalp courtesy of its natural antibacterial and healing properties.
Treat your locks to a weekly mask by heating up two tablespoons of coconut oil (more if you have super long hair) and working it into your scalp and strands. Allow it to soak in for half an hour while you read a magazine or have a cuppa, and when you rinse it out your mane will be extra glossy and silky.
3. As A Skincare Supplement
Coconut oil is a fantastic beauty supplement when used in cooking, and serves as a great alternative to olive oil or vegetable oil. It’s packed full of healthy fats, which help to hydrate and nourish your skin from within, so your complexion glows like never before.
“It can tolerate high heat during cooking, making it a safe oil to cook with,” says nutritionist and wellness coach Jessica Sepel. “It’s also a good fat, made of medium-chain fatty acids, which keep you full and satiated after meals and provide the body with energy over a sustained period of time.”
4. For Oil Pulling
Oil pulling, which involves swishing a teaspoon of coconut oil around in your mouth for 10-20 minutes, is a natural way to help whiten your teeth and reduce toxins in your mouth. It might sound weird (and admittedly it can feel a little strange at first), but it’s a tried and tested technique for a whiter, healthier smile.
“Oil pulling is a traditional Ayurveda therapy that draws out toxins, and it’s a great cleansing remedy,” agrees Jessica. In addition to the more superficial benefits, coconut oil contains natural antibacterial properties, which can help to reduce plaque build-up that can lead to tooth decay. Want to give it a whirl? Try Keeko Coconut Oil Pulling kit in Morning Mint.
5. As A Face & Body Moisturiser
Thanks to all the healthy fats it contains, coconut oil in an incredibly effective natural moisturiser that helps to replenish dry, cracked or flaky skin. When used as a daily moisturiser, it can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and helps to plump up your skin.
Coconut oil also contains antioxidants, which help to combat skin-ageing free radicals, so with continued use it can work wonderfully as an anti-ageing treatment. Just be careful to avoid getting any oil in your eyes, as we mentioned previously this could cause irritation.
A Note On Fair Trade Practices
When shopping for coconut oil, it’s important to purchase brands that support fair trade practices. Many commercial coconut oil brands out there have been know to manufacture their product in mass quantities, and have been linked to worker exploitation and unsustainable practices. And while ethical and sustainable coconut oil might cost a few dollars more, it tends to be purer, healthier, so you get more bang for your buck.
“I think commercial coconut oil brands have enjoyed making a lot of money and exploiting fair trade practices, and more people are starting to realise this,” says INDAH’s Teisha Lowry. “We really noticed this when we stopped making our coconut oil for a period because we thought people wanted the cheap stuff, but we were pleasantly surprised. We had such a big callout for it to come back, because people really want what’s best for their health, our environment and humanity.”

A beautiful bronze tan is the perfect summer accessory. Not only does it make you look slimmer and more toned, but a tan also looks amazing when paired with bright summer fashions and beachwear. Here we share our five top tanning tips for creating a gorgeous golden glow using only natural and cruelty-free beauty buys.
1. Exfoliate for a flawless finish.
To ensure a smooth surface on your skin for an even application, it’s vital that you exfoliate your body thoroughly prior to applying a self tanner.
“You should always exfoliate 24 – 48 hours before applying tan to remove the dead skin cells on the top layer of skin,” advises Sonya Driver, founder of organic and cruelty-free tanning brand Eco Tan.
We recommend exfoliating in the shower with a natural granulated scrub, like Atom’s delectably aromatic Coffee Body Scrub:
2. Prep your danger zones.
Fake tan can ‘grab’ onto dry skin, which can result in dark patches and an uneven-looking tan. To avoid this, apply a tiny amount of body lotion to dry skin before you apply self tan. “A small amount of moisturiser can be applied to dry areas of concern, like your elbows, knees, and ankles,” advises Sonya.
The palms of your hands are also prone to discolouration, because they tend to be in contact with the tanning mousse or lotion for a longer period of time. To avoid stained palms, simply use a tanning mitt or glove and wash your hands thoroughly after applying self tanner.
3. Apply self-tan strategically.
When applying tanner, it’s best to start with your feet and work your way up to your legs, butt, torso, back, chest, arms, neck and face. This technique will help you avoid streaks and creasing.
It’s also best to apply your tan in circular motions, rather than rubbing up and down. This will help ensure that you cover every square inch of skin, minimising the risk of streaks and missed patches.
4. Keep your skin hydrated to extend the life of your tan.
Your tan will gradually fade over a period of about a week as your skin naturally sheds and renews itself. And while you can’t make your tan last forever, you can help it linger a little longer simply by applying moisturiser at least once per day.
“Moisturise daily to keep skin hydrated and nourished to extend your tan,” says Sonya. “Another tip is to use a body wash that is soap-free and SLS-free so that it doesn’t strip away your tan.”
5. Remove your old tan before reapplying.
It might seem like a good idea to layer more tanning lotion or mousse straight over the top of your old fake tan to deepen the colour, but this is a big no-no.
Your old tan will start to become patchy as your skin cells naturally shed, and it’s important to start with a smooth and even surface when applying fake tan. For this reason, you should remove your old tan completely before you reapply.
“The best way to remove old tan is by exfoliating,” advises Sonya. “I remove old tan when I notice it is starting to wear off. This is usually 7-10 days after I’ve applied it.”
To remove fake tan, use a body scrub that’s blended with natural oils like coconut or jojoba oil. You can make a D.I.Y scrub by mixing ¼ cup of raw sugar with ½ cup of coconut oil – we like INDAH Coconut Oil To Go.
